Everything You Gave Me
by Terri Jones

"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.' " --Erma Bombeck

At Cornerstone Community Church in Wildomar, CA, Pastor Ron Armstrong said one Sunday to test ourselves to see if we were fit to serve in a ministry: hold a mirror up to your face. If you see fog, you can serve in a ministry.

I started out with Ladybugs on Tuesday Family Nights. When I attended the first meeting, I wanted to just help, not lead. With Ginger's help, I got assimilated as a leader right away. I didn't know if I had the chops to talk in front of a group of third grade girls. But that age group will listen to whatever you have to say. As I got to know them I got more comfortable.

Then I got a little more brave and decided to help out with CKIDZ Temecula. Teresa helped me get into the groove assisting in small groups. One morning I asked Teresa if I could assist in CKIDZ Kindergarten and First Grade. That day we talked about happy and sad moments. The kids listed things that made them happy - like getting a hair cut or a good grade. Then they listed the sad moments. One girl said her daddy moved out. A boy said his daddy had moved out also. Another girl said her daddy died. These kids were all but 5 or 6 years old and have already dealt with heartaches of a lifetime. It was then I knew that was the ministry for me.

Like wildfire, I volunteered in another ministry, Early Childhood. Again, I just helped out to find my groove. I found I really dug the preschool age because when you get down on their level, literally and figuratively, you learn more than actually teach. Wendy saw potential in me to teach preschool and I just went with it. One day, I taught a lesson about the parable Jesus told about the wise man who built his house upon the rock. A boy sang the entire song about the wise men and the foolish men building their houses upon the rock and sand, a song I hadn't heard in ages. I teared up because I was so impressed.

Then, Mike saw me as a fit to lead large group in CKIDZ so I got over my fear of public speaking with a microphone (which still seems a little freaky but I know I'll get used to it). I did the trifecta last Sunday - helped lead worship, led large group and then a small group.

I'm awfully glad I saw fog that day in my mirror and I use everything God gives me.
